In line with its goal of creating sustainable and safe living spaces, and in accordance with the principle of "planned, safe and solid construction of settlements" included in its 2020-2024 Strategic Plan, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is conducting a comprehensive building inventory study to make Izmir resilient against disasters. This study, initiated with a scientific and participatory approach after the Izmir Earthquake of October 30, 2020, took shape through the "Izmir Earthquake Common Sense Meeting," organized with the contributions of 14 universities, 25 public institutions, 38 non-governmental organizations, and 29 municipalities. Following this process, the Building Stock Inventory Project, in which structures were examined in the field and analyzed by expert academics, was implemented in cooperation with the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers of the Union of Turkish Chambers of Engineers and Architects (TMMOB). As part of the first stages of the project;

  • 33,100 in Bayraklı,

  • 61,673 in Bornova,
    A total of 94,773 buildings have been inventoried; and as of 2024, it is aimed to inspect another 64,587 buildings in Konak.

With the Building Identity Documents created for each building, the earthquake risk status of the buildings is determined; and with the data obtained, urban transformation strategies specific to İzmir are developed.

The long-term goal is to complete the inventory work on all 903,803 buildings in İzmir.

This project, carried out with the municipality's own resources, is one of the most comprehensive risk reduction projects aimed at making Izmir more prepared for disasters in terms of physical, economic and social aspects.
